Barcelona crashed out of the Copa del Rey, despite winning on the night by a goal to nil courtesy of Xavi in Seville.
Just like at the weekend, it took Lionel Messi a while to get going, but once he did he was almost unstoppable.
Barcelona started the match trailing on aggregate by two goals to one after Sevilla's shock win at the Nou Camp. Pep Guardiola fielded an attack-minded side, including Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Ibrahimovic and the ever-impressive Messi. Barcelona would have to score two goals at least to progress, with the away goals rule favoring Sevilla.
Despite all their good early work, it was Sevilla who were on the ascendancy in the first half, creating numerous dangerous opportunities. However, Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop was in a defiant mood and chances by both Messi and Ibrahimovic were blocked in either half.
Particularly in the second half, Messi was proving incredibly difficult to stop for the Sevilla defense, and he went close on several occasions only to be denied by Palop.
Xavi did provide the breakthrough with a precise long range shot in the 64th minute, but it was too little in the end.
Messi did go close several times later, hitting the post and having a tremendous low drive expertly saved by Palop. Messi picked up a booking out of frustration and could do nothing in the dying minutes to prevent Josep Guardiola's perfect record of winning every competition being blemished.
